Direct Care started in the field of Primary Care as a mode of practice in which patients pay their physician directly in the form of a monthly fee or annual fee in order to have better access to their doctor. Furthermore, it allows the doctor more quality time and counsel available to spend with patients. It’s highly personalized, comprehensive care. The overall goal is to provide patients the best possible care.
Studies show that with increased education and communication from the doctor, it increases patient understanding, trust, and patient engagement. This includes increased adherence to recommendations and better self-care skills which, in turn, affect health and well-being. Direct care is a pathway through which communication can lead to better overall health due to increased access to care, greater patient knowledge and shared understanding, higher quality medical decisions, improved therapeutic cooperation, increased social support, patient engagement and empowerment, and better management of emotions.
The amazing thing about being a direct care provider is that it gives us the chance to change the system. We are looked on to be leaders in our communities, educating our patients on how they can improve their lives. If we are able to improve the lives of all the patients we have access to, and improve their knowledge base about their own health, how much reach can we have to change the world? We have the medical knowledge to improve our patients wellness, their mental health and their lives.
No matter what kind of doctor you are, you went to school with the best intentions. You imagined yourself improving your patient’s lives with your care. In an insurance model of practice, it’s a race to the bottom. How much faster can you go? How many more patients can you see? If we’re able to step back and look at the big picture, is this the system that we want to encourage? And yet we do, everyday, by continuing to let insurance companies dictate the level of care we provide.
